Dougherty CASA is a division of the Lily Pad Sane Center, is a non-profit organization that serves children in the foster care system. A CASA is a trained community volunteer appointed by a judge to speak up for the best interests of an abused, neglected, or abandoned child involved in a juvenile court deprivation proceeding. Bringing urgency to a child’s needs, both in and out of a courtroom, CASA volunteers advocate for safety, permanence and well-being for children through independent recommendations. If you are interested in becoming a CASA volunteer, please contact us at the Lily Pad, 320 W. Second Ave. Albany, GA 31701.

aining class in 2016. Dougherty Court Appointed Special Advocates,

The CASA program was awarded to the Lily Pad through the Georgia CASA program. The program advocates for children in court that have been removed from families due to abuse and deprivation. This program is run solely on volunteer power. They are the 'eyes and ears' of the court and work with all people involved in a child's life to make informative recommendations for a safe and permanent home. CASA is assigned to cases by the Juvenile Court Judge during deprivation hearings.  The CASA Program Director matches volunteers to each case.  Each volunteer commits up to a year of time to each case they are assigned.  Most volunteers take up to two cases at a time, but can take more or less, depending on their availability.  The volunteer is responsible for visiting with the child monthly, contacting and gathering information from all systems involved in the child’s life (i.e. parents, foster parents, case managers, school teachers, doctors, therapist, etc) and summarizing the information gathered in report form, providing recommendations for a safe and permanent home to the Judge.  The Dougherty CASA Program conducts two to three CASA Volunteer trainings a year.  Each training consists of 30 ‘classroom’ hours and 10 additional hours of court observation. Each volunteer must accumulate 12 hours of in-service training each year. These trainings are provided by the Program Director once a month. The training is free to volunteers.
